BABA HIYADATULLAH OF MOHALLA CHABUK SAWARAN LAHORE
THE PUNJABI POET OF GREAT STATUS, WRITER OF HEER RANJHA

Marriage procession of Heer by a Lahori Artist

Mohalla Chabuk Sawaran was the house of many great personalities. Obviously the best known of them all is M.A. Rahman Chughtai the artist of Lahore, whose Art rocked the international world. But there were others there too. Nurud din Christi was part of the Mohalla too and of the many books he wrote, the one on LAHORE stands as the first serious history making of the city of Lahore. A fellow family member Muharram Ali Chisti was a great intellectual of his times, who hosted Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in Lahore. But the Punjabi poet, now lesser known, received accolades far away from his home. We came across a thesis on Baba Hiyadatyullah written by a girl for the Oriental College University of the Punjab Lahore but we were not able to obtain a copy. In any case we heard of Baba Hiyadatullah all the time.

The first thing we all heard was that he lived above the age of 120 years and had seen many political times of his life. We came across a photograph of him and it seems that the premise is more than true. We also heard that Punjabi intellectuals including Sikh gentlemen used to visit his house. Sardar Puran Singh and Bhai Vir Singh the great Sikh writers also went to the house of the poet. It was asserted that the immortal verse DHOLE CHAREDAIN MARI HEER CHEEKAIN was not of poet Waris Shah but of Baba Hiyadatullah himself. Some where in 1890s Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani visited the Chinay Wali Mosque and met the Mohalla people. Baba Hiyadatullah was impressed with his knowledge about religion and conceded love for him. Later on when in 1904 it was declared that Mirza Sahib was a Prophet, Baba Sahib issued an edict rejoinder along with 77 others, in which he said that he never believed in Mirza Sahib being a Prophet and he was 100 percent a believer of the finality of our Prophet May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him. This is quoted by M. A. Rahman Chughtai in his book Dabistan Mussavari as he heard it from Baba himself. Baba Hiyadatullah was a staunch Muslim. HE COULD NOT EVEN THINK OF CONTESTING THE FINALITY OF PROPHET HOOD. The Ahmadiyahs have no documentation on Baba Hiyadatullah at all, although they claim ownership of him. Missing Bait nama, yes!

Baba Hiyadatullah and Mulla Ghaus

A published book carries a drawing of Baba Hiyadatullah on the cover but we do not have it. The poor photograph with Mulla Ghous is all we have. Mulla Ghous was Imam of the small mosque in Mohalla Chabuk Sawaran, just opposite the house of M.A. Rahman Chughtai. He was the parent of people like Majeed Al-Makky and Hameed Al-Makky. Mulla Ghous was son of Muhammed Makky al-mashoor Shaid de Makhi.
