Quoting Sikh sources is best way of introducing things. A famous Sikh writer writes about Guru Govind Singh (1666-1708):

“From his writings it appears that he drew inspiration from martial deities lie Goddesses Chandi, Sri and Bhagwati. At the same time he ordered his followers to wear their hair and beards unshorn, having one name ‘Singh’ and carry other symbols of the Khalsa including a Kirpan.”

Music intrument of Guru Arjun

The present Identity of the Sikhs belong to Guru Govind Singh.

When did the conflict between the Muslims and the Sikhs actually start? It was in Emperor Jahangeer’s own words like this:

Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale
Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale

“There was a Hindu named Arjan in Gobindwal on the banks of the Beas River. Pretending to be a spiritual guide, he had won over as devotees many simple-minded Indian and even some ignorant, stupid Muslims by broadcasting his claims to be a saint. They called him guru. Many fools from all around had recourse to him and believed in him implicitly. For three or four generations they had been peddling this same stuff. For a long time I had been thinking that either this false trade should be eliminated or that he could be bought into the embrace of Islam. At length, when Khusraw passed by there, this inconsequential little fellow wished to pay homage to Khusraw. When Khusraw stopped at his residence, (Arjan) came out and had an interview with (khusraw). Giving him some elementary spiritual precepts picked up here and there, he made a mark with saffron on his forehead, which is called qashqa in the idiom of the Hindus and which they consider lucky. When this was reported to me, I realized how perfectly false he was and ordered him brought to me. I awarded his houses and dwellings and those of his children to Murtaza khan, and I ordered his goods and possessions confiscated and him executed. “

A political tale of that time. Let us for a moment forget about Guru Arjun. The date of his martyrdom by the Sikhs is given as 3rd June, and the day is important as a memory. Now let us shift gears to 3rd June, 1984, the day of his martyrdom. The scene the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The man sitting on a top level of the temple was Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. An Indian journalist writes about this hero of the Sikhs:

“Maybe it was the mad gleam in his eyes, or the overconfidence with which he conveyed in no uncertain terms that he was supreme. He looked crafty, like a man who was exploiting his position to influence the gullible.”

Body of Shaheed Baba Jarnail Singh Jee
Body of Shaheed Baba Jarnail Singh Jee

In hundreds of years, the accusations bordered on the same. There is no dispute about Guru Arjan, but the position of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale is disputed. The word dreaded by India, namely KHALISTAN comes to mind. Operation BlueStar made the entire Sikh community realize that they were as vulnerable as ever.

Islam forbids criticism or accusations against other ways of life. No one has the right to look down upon others. For me Sikhs are splendid people. My father loved them and they loved my father. But history is dark with characters who hide behind Identities, but are simply depraved in their search of life. There are dacoits in Sikh history, and the Sikhs know that themselves. But we talk of Modern Sikhs in totality. The 19th and 20th century Sikhs are some of the best humans in history. Leaving aside their militant character, they carved an intellectual position for themselves. Bhai Vir Singh, Sardar Puran Singh, Sataryati Singh, Ishwar Singh, Sobha Singh, Sumer Singh, Khushwant Singh, and the likes, are legendary names in Sikh history. Surprisingly our family knew them all. When Sikhs refer to Al-Mighty as RAB, it pleases us, for we too call Allah as Rab. Our language and Culture intermingle at various places. Like Hindus and Muslims are two Nations, Sikhs are a Nation too, and they deserve a homeland of their own, to live their life according to their dictats. India should make a Vatican for them. Call it whatever you like. The Sikhs fondly call it Khalistan.

THE HURRICANE OF CHANGE WILL COME THROUGH DESTRUCTION

From the day of Independence, when the political malaise became too much, the Pakistani Army stepped in and corrected the system. That seems to be a thing of the past, as external forces have stopped Army in its track. The Pakistan Army wins all kind of gold medals in the world, but are unable to cope with the Machiavellian politicians of our country. What good is any geography without standing Ideology?Either the system revert to its normal anarchy, or it explodes with a vast destruction. I can hear the Swan Song of all this coming to fruit.
Unable to control politicians
Unable to control politicians

Which fool can still claim that the system will correct itself? That democracy can bring relief to an impoverished nation. The din of democracy is a curse for the nation. When Quaid e Azam himself rejected this system in speech and writing, who were the demagogues who went back to the relic of old times. Each election is a farce. The much touted 1970 election was a farce too, as it was engineered in that way. The great Cabal of the world not wishing to see the united East and West Pakistan becoming a power of the world. Even the election of Maharani Hasina Wajid was a farce too. We are ruled through the din of democracy, when democratic regimes of the world are destroyed at will. We all know how the Iranian regime in the past was destroyed, and there are many examples. If a leader is good for the country, he needs to be removed. Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan is a good example. Only the corrupt are given preferences to destroy the fiber of a nation. There are worldly laws, and there are Divine laws. The Quran says very clearly that ALLAH WILL NEVER ALLOW WRONG TO LAST FOR LONG.  Already the requiem of TAUBA given to our leaders is gone. Destruction awaits us!

Survival required unity
Survival required unity

Yes, destruction. Construction will only come after destruction. At least somebody will be there, if not us! When magnetic poles reverse, worldly destruction comes. There was a time when perhaps only a few hundred homo sapiens were left in the world. But this is the strength of humanity. In the war of survival they excel over all other beings. The resilience is ever great. And we know for sure that Pakistanis are a resilient nation. Only a fraction will survive but they will make Pakistan, Pakistan again.  I hope my children are there amongst them. Loyalty towards Ideology is the ultimate aim of humankind. The moronic aspect is true for other cadres including the slothy journalists of today. I am contented. I am not afraid of Allah’s wrath. I follow the way of Allah! My mind and body is at peace.

Pierre Trudeau was very close to Pakistan

On the death of M.A. Rahman Chughtai on 17th January, 1975, we communicated with many Heads of State who condoled his death with us. One person we communicated was with Pierre Trudeau, who was the Prime Minister of Canada at that time. We communicated and we were surprised at his openness in expression with us. There was no red tape in his life. We sent him a copy of the book AMAL E CHUGHTAI, two collotypes Austrian by Max Jaffe of Chughtai Art and other things. He already knew about M.A. Rahman Chughtai as he was well versed with Pakistan even before that. One of the many letters we received gives his opinion about M.A. Rahman Chughtai as:

No small words coming from a Canadian Prime Minister. People may forget that there is already a painting of M.A. Rahman Chughtai in the National Gallery of Canada. People from Canada should go and check it there. It is there in their catalogue even on the Internet.

Prime Ministrer Pierre Trudeau did invite me to Canada, but unfortunately I was not in a position to go for a variety of reasons. The number one being that it was not in our budget to do so. For people with hard earned money, international travelling is never easy. It is our regret that we were not able to do so.

The advent of Justin Trudeau is restoring our faith in the liberalism of the West, even although Canada is a small part of it. Hate destroys the peace of the world. Love unites nations.

Cow riots are nothing new. We have written on the many cow riots in Lahore, both during the Sikh as well as British period. Those are facts. Please check the blogs yourself. A summary we can add here:
Narendar Modi
Narendar Modi

“The KOOKA sect was formed by one Baluk Ram in the year 1845. A carpenter named Ram singh inherited the position. They were interested in going back to the Pristine qualities of their religion. The Sikhs and the Hindus joined hands in this tirade and in 1845 a number of Butcher shops were raided in Lahore and some Butchers put to death. The aim that there should be no display of beef meat at Butchers shop as it was against their principles. The British were in a quandary as what to do. Full control of Lahore was not in their  hands yet. The young puppet Dallip Singh was being groomed for complete take over. The  Cow riots as they were called were becoming more and more destructive.”

Similarly another famous riot was of 1846, when:
“It would be like other days as on 21st April, 1846 at about 11 am. Nothing unusual was expected. A camel caravan from Ferozepur, with ammunition, was outside one of the Gates of Lahore. There were some cows blocking their way. A British sentry tried to move the cows away, but they were not budging from their stance. Instead of the butt of his gun, he used the bayonet side, and injured three cows in the process. A riot started in Lahore in 1846.”
BEEF STEAKS
BEEF STEAKS

These were not ordinary riots. Each resulted in death and hanging. Then we hear of the Freemason Paolo di Avitable, who worked for Ranjit Singh, and had made a strong Fort for himself over Buddhu ka Awa in Lahore. The reputation for his cruelty was ever famous and he hanged, chopped, tortured people at will. Strict rules were enforced by him. C. Grey writes about him:

“He inflicted death for the most trivial offenses. Honigberger relates that some Mussalman butchers, presuming on the presence of a Christian Governor, broke the Sikh Law against cow-killing, where upon Avitable hanged them, remarking that though he himself saw no crime in the matter, he was bound to carry out the Sikh laws even more rigorously than the Sikhs themselves.”
General Paolo Crescenzo Avitable
General Paolo Crescenzo Avitable

This is what the two nation theory was all about in the first place. The Hindus worshipped the cow as an Icon, the Muslims like other brethern, the Christians and the Jews, ate them with relish. So what would happen if by some stroke of fate, Narendar Modi could become the President of the United States of America. Americans beware, your way of life is composed of beef steaks and you cannot do without them. If Modi comes to power, he will do the same things that he did in Gujarat with most of you. Cows would roam the streets of America at will. The Texans would groan with pain as no more steaks after that.

Of course Hindus are welcome to their point of view. But when imposed on others, it becomes food for terrorism from within of the worst kind.

NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT PUTTING BODY TO REST

James Dean
James Dean

The world is on a strange line. Everywhere there seems to be glory in moving up and down, dancing to barbaric tunes and letting your body not even rest for a moment. The brain starts working when the body is at rest, when the person has an environment of silence to think and to ponder and to innovate other meanings of life., Of course a share of everything should be there but modern life is driving the youth to nuts. To rebellion of the strangest kind, that is being a REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE.

Inspiration
Inspiration

The theme was perfected by James Dean, the American screen icon of the 1950s. The idea that ‘girls just want to have fun’ or the boys are after only one thing in life, that is repeated seduction. These are the ideas that bring civilizations down, and it has happened n the past, and it will happen in the future. To inculcate in the young growing mind, the RESPONSIBILITY OF EXISTENCE, that Allah created humankind for a search through thinking and pondering, in finding the solutions to the problems of life.  The search for Utopia was not meant the Satanic relegation to the past.

Thinking man
Thinking man

The Mullah has taken us far away from the Quran,. but the so called Seculars have taken us far away from even thinking. Putting thought in anything leads to goodness. Thought brings virtue to limelight. Islam is the only WAY OF LIFE that encourages THINKING AND PONDERING as a DICTATION FROM ALLAH.  The rest rely on merely faith, even when the faith involves worship of statues. If you let serenity fill your mind, enjoy the bounties of Allah as your right, and move with humankind towards a better tomorrow. You have to have a moment of retrospect, to sit down and to contemplate life. Without that you are just a statue yourself in a dance riot. A chemical scientist was telling me that even the tiniest particles in life, the neurons around atoms are shy creatures. They are on their own  reacting to presence of other similar particles.  Life at that level or at our level, means one thing and one thing alone, thought leads to exploration where no man has gone before. An American saying goes that “Life is like licking a honey around a thorn’. Making that honey available for others is our way of life.

SHAH JAHAN PUTS THE CROWN ON AURANGZEB’S HEAD

The work and combined effort of Jahan Ara and others

A crowned Aurangzeb Alamgeer
A crowned Aurangzeb Alamgeer

The English translation of the bigoted Jadunath Sarkar of MAASIR-I-ALAMGEERI of Saqi Mustad Khan jumps at places and there are deliberate gaps there. On 12th May (29th Shaban) 1659, Aurangzeb Alamgeer enters the Delhi Fort. His second coronation is listed by Jadunath Sarkar as being on 5th June, 1659 (24th Ramazan). There is no account of the missing 25 days or so. Some portions left perhaps due to Mustad Khan, others left by Jadunath Sarkar. A lot happened in those 25 days.

Aurangzeb Alamgeer gave the utmost respect to Shah Jahan and the father was told the whole story of his achievements. The reconciliation was started by Syed Muhammed Qanauji and perfected by Jahan Ara herself. In the end she won the day by reconciling Shah Jahan with his son. The result Shah Jahan himself put the crown on the head of the Prince Aurangzeb Alamgeer and got issued a coin in his name on the 1st of Ramazan at Agra. That is 23 days before the official coronation mentioned in Alamgeeri texts. The coin and khutba was generated which called ABU MUZZAFER MOHYUDDIN MUHAMMED AURANGZEB BAHADUR ALAMGEER. (page 134 Aurangzeb Alamgeer book by Yusuf Ali Khan quoting Jaipur State Records) There is even an inscription in the mosque of HUSSAM DIN SAKHTA AT SANBAR JAIPUR, which lists 1659 as first Jaloos of Alamgeer.

JAHAN ARA AUTOGRAPH MS
JAHAN ARA AUTOGRAPH MS

In all these episodes Aurangzeb Alamgeer is projected as a villain but it is forgotten by historians, that Shah Jahan was so carried away with his love for Dara Shikoh, that father and son, invited Aurangzeb Alamgeer to Delhi, and had made plans for his assassination. It was Roshan Ara Begum, sister of Aurangzeb Alamgeer, who informed him of this plan, and Aurangzeb declined their invitation. That is why Roshan Ara Begum was so close to Aurangzeb Alamgeer later in life too.

The date of this reconciliation would be very close to the 12th May entry of Aurangzeb Alamgeer into Delhi Fort. Possibly a day or two later. It should be kept in mind that the Jaipur State Records are of that date, not later in life. It is the official newsletter sent to other officials about the working of the Court. Raja Jai Singh and his heirs were very close to the Mughal Court. This is no second hand information from the streets. Scholars are welcome to research on this project. But the bigotry of many Indian writers obsessed with creating their own versions of history without documentation is at the least repulsive to scholarship.

P.S.

Shah Jahan
Shah Jahan

On 5th June 1660 the first year of reign was celebrated at Mughal Court with great enthusiasm. This was the 24th of Ramazan. Official decree was issued by the Emperor Aurangzeb, that the sacred day was the 1st of Ramazan, when his father put the crown on his head, so from then on, the official commemoration day would be 1st Ramazan, and so the jaloos should be calculated from that day. This was his homage to his father Shah Jahan.

Grave Dara Shikoh
Grave Dara Shikoh

Maulana Yusuf Ali Khan Librarian of Records published research

The merit of life of Maulana Yusuf Ali Khan is above reproach. He carried certificates from the Government in Jaipur. He came across newsletters which reached Jaipur and consulted them and took out a book on the unknown life of Aurangzeb Alamgeer. Published in Karachi in 1951, it is worthy of records elsewhere too.

Dara Shikoh in beloved arms
Dara Shikoh in beloved arms

The Newsletter narrates the arrival of Dara Shikoh in Delhi and the lockup of father and son in Khizarpur prison. The interesting part is that father and son declined to receive food from outside and used to cook their own food. Then there is the letter of Dara Shikoh to Aurangzeb, apologizing for everything, and telling him that he has no no desire for the throne and he be allowed to live. Dara Shikoh promised to pray for Aurangzeb and his sons, all his life. It seems that everything was driven out of the Prince in this capture alone. The zeal was gone.

Yusuf Ali Khan Librarian Jaipur
Yusuf Ali Khan Librarian Jaipur

Another very interesting feature is the burial of Dara Shikoh in Humayouns courtyard. Aurangzeb Alamgeer had seen to it that Dara Shikoh should be buried properly there. News reaches the Emperor, that the grave is no longer in good repair. Aurangzeb Alamgeer issues orders for the immediate, and proper repair of the grave, as well as appointment of Caretakers to take care of it. Orders were also issued for it to be covered with a proper dignified chaddar (cloth) all the time. Upholding of such traditions, tell us of the attitude of Aurangzeb towards his dead brother. Given honour and dignity even after death.

This may look amazing to some, but then Aurangzeb Alamgeer is the most misquoted and misunderstood Mughal Emperor of Hindustan. There is so much animosity against him, that no one is interested in hearing the truth about him. There is much more in the records at Jaipur. In another blog, yes!

Shaukat Thanvi

The allure of Lahore brought humourist Shaukat Thanvi from Bhopal to Lahore. An Urdu speaking person pitted in a very Punjabi town. The writer wrote a book on Lahoriath with his varied experiences here. He says it is difficult to ask a tonga driver to take him to Radio Station, when most probably he would take you to the Railway Station. He talks about Bazaars like Anarkali, where he says there are lots of damsels moving around, and warns that short of calling them sisters and daughters, one should not enrage their modesty in any way. He expresses an opinion that in Lahore you see both things at the same time, destruction of things going on as well as construction of things going on too. You have to decide what to choose to see. He talks of the clean Mall road, the Kulfa shops in Anarkali, made not of Vanaspati Malai but that of Desi Ghee. He talks of the Mausoleum of Jahangeer being separated from own, deserted Shalimar Bagh and even talks of the low attendance of Namazis at Badshahi Mosque. He observes that as a spectator for he was not from here.

Cartoon of Shaukat Thanvi
Cartoon of Shaukat Thanvi

Shaukat Thanvi suggests that you choose big chadars (sheets) for your charpai, for there are plenty of mosquitoes and qatmals in Lahori hotels. He says it is best to sleep under the charpai to avoid them. He took charge of Pancholi Art Pictures and as he lived on Mayo road and his office was in Muslim Town, he had to travel on a bicycle at least five miles one way both sides, making it a ten mile journey. The result he says that with this travel he was constantly hungry. He talks of second hand book shops outside Lohari gate, and enjoys the company of Zaheer Sahib of Urdu Book Stall, who hesitated to take money from him  for his own book. Wives in Lahore never blame their husbands but blame the friends of their husbands for his wrongs.

Shaukat Thanvi ended up in Lahore and his death in 1963 was a national loss. I think one of his sons was a well known television artist.

Lahore has a history of a thousand years of Art and Culture. Different periods, different kind of works. Obviously different artists, different innovation. Different inspirations. The earliest works of Lahore are inspired by Central Asian as well as Chinese works. The Sultanate period has its own dynamics. But the rarest period in Lahore is from 1750 to 1800, an otherwise dead period of life here. Obviously there was a continuity of traditions here, but the patronage had changed in a very drastic manner. We hope to find dated things in our path of research.
Not an easy task.

M.A. Rahman Chughtai wrote the phenomenal work LAHORE KE DABISTAN MUSSAWARI and we already have had it translated in English. We are editing it, finding specimens of what we can find and we will eventually publish it in book form for the world. All this is not easy, with no one to help us in any way. But the journey we started alone, may end alone, but in the long run, a trail of a caravan would be there. That delights us.

The Hindu works are from a demolished building in Lahore dated around 1780. But if we see the faces, there is no relation with the works done in Lahore during the Sikh period. The faces are all of a different kind. A strange kind of Shiva’s personification as well as of Krishnas. But the Lingam worship is there. The Raja is a different kind altogether. Not a Sikh of any kind. More research is required here.

On the other hand the Rustam we have is a different Rustam too. But there are round facesa in both Hindu as well asa Muslim subjects. People look more real of life than idealized ones. According to another historian, Kanwal Khalid, that is the test of Lahori paining in itself.

A long time back the Governments in Pakistan were Pakistani friendly and promoted our interests all over the world. Today the morons can only think of making money for themselves and their cronies. Liaquat Ali Khan presented a painting of M.A. Rahman Chughtai to it at the residence of International Court of Justice at Hague, namely the Peace Palace, Hague. People from all over the world go there and are introduced to the artist from Pakistan represented there. Our relatives have enjoyed VIP treatment there by mentioning their links to the artist. We visited the place too, and received a grand reception from the Director of the place.

When we picture jurists from all over the world assembled there, with Chughtai Art at their back, it sends a message of great contentment to us. There are other lobbies who are trying to sabotage such places where Pakistan is represented, and we all the bigotry of that lobby. There were various attempts to shelve the painting. Obviously by our neighbours. We do not know the latest for 2015. We will find out.
